The KaiKai Book

Mangroves are a valuable source of food for aboriginal people. Here, people from Maningrida in Arnhem Land gather a variety of foods in the mangrove forests which grow in the intertidal regions of the coast and tidal creeks. Foods found in the mangroves nclude mud crabs, mangrove worms, and a variety of shellfish. Middens are mounds of shells where Aboriginal people over centuries have cooked and eaten their catch. These scenes were filmed by Stella Smith in 1998. Edited by Bill Day in 2013 from VHS tape.
